Featured Artisan in Garopaba - Stephanie Mohler

Our featured local artisan is Stephanie Mohler which is currently residing in old town Garopaba.

Featuring Stephanie Mohler

Stephanie`s current paintings focus on recording local Garopaba fishing culture, fish species, indigenous plant and tree species of the Mata Atlantica.

Stephanie paints on recycled wood, canvas, and paper using acrylic and/or oil paints. She also looks to traditional Chinese painting for her compositions, using positive and negative space while trying to capture the essence of the subject matter. Color is another important aspect of her work along with line.

Stephanie`s paintings are meant to be educational and emotive and she also hopes to inspire people to value the local traditional fishing culture of Garopaba and to save and manage diversity-rich biomes that exist in the Mata Atlantica, on land and in the sea. Stephanie`s paintings celebrate the local fishing culture, diversity of arbor and plant life, and the importance of their continued existence.

Whale Watching in Garopaba

Every year between July and November the Right Whale visits the Garopaba coastline seeking warm waters ideal for feeding their newborns.

The Right Whale is well known for its docile behavior. This aspect turned it into an easy target during the whaling season.

Whale Watching in Garopaba

After almost reaching extinction, whale hunting was officially forbidden. In 1801 the "Armacao" was closed and Garopaba turned to be a fishing village once again, but the last whale was killed only in 1972. Garopaba happens to be the perfect location to watch the Right Whale in its natural environment, in addition to being able to bear witness to such a magical creature up close, is truly a memorable life experience.
